Performance appraisal steps
1. Defining basic requirements on performance appraisal.
At the first stage of performance appraisal, leaders should identify fields, skills, and results to be appraised and their relation with enterprise’s goals. Generally, these requirements can be deduced from the work description and divided into two parts: behavioral standards and work result standards.
2. Choosing appropriate appraising method.
In reality, there are various appraising methods but no method is the best for all organizations.
Within an enterprise, different methods can be applied to different positions, units or departments such as sales, production, marketing or administration department.
3. Training leaders and appraisers on performance appraising skill.
Inappropriate appraisal methods or ill-defined standards or objects results in bias, or unwise decisions on payment and rewarding. Hence, it is necessary for leaders and appraisers to be trained on these skills.
4. Discussing with employees on rating content and scope.
Before rating, rating content and scope need to be discussed between appraisers and employees.
These discussions help to specify the appraising field and the importance of appraising results to both enterprise and its employees.
